British Touring Car Championship

Series Overview

The British Touring Car Championship, which began in 1958, is Britain's premier saloon car racing series. The BTCC's popularity is widely attributed to the strong visual resemblance the race cars have to the production models on which they're based, and to the closeness of its racing.

The 2006 championship is being contested at 10 separate race meetings, each comprised of three sprint races, for a total of 30 rounds. ITV1 is broadcasting the events.

Sporting Regulations
Types of car
In 2006, the BTCC is open to drivers, manufacturers and teams using two types of car:

BTC Touring cars were built to meet the technical specifications introduced in 2001
Super 2000 cars meet the technical specifications currently used in the World Touring Car Championship
Both types of car fight for the BTCC Championship outright, with no separate 'class' title in existence. A weight ballast system is used to bridge any performance gap and this can be reviewed five times throughout the season. Uniquely, cars competing in the BTCC can use petrol, diesel-turbo or gas-powered engines.

Race format
At each meeting there are three BTCC races of equal distance held on the Sunday, each counting towards a driver's championship points total. All races commence with a standing start off the grid and are a straight sprint race to the chequered flag.
Untimed practice
The BTCC action on each race weekend begins on the Saturday morning with two 40-minute free practice sessions. If a session is disrupted, the BTCC's Clerk of the Course is not obliged to resume it.
Official qualifying
A 30-minute qualifying session is held on Saturday afternoon. This determines the starting order for the first of Sunday's three races. Unless in exceptional circumstances, the session will be restarted if disrupted. Should two drivers set the same time, the driver setting it first will be ahead of the other on the grid.

Starting grids
The first race's starting grid takes the order of Saturday afternoon's qualifying session. Race Two's starting grid is decided by the finishing order in race one. Race Three's starting grid is decided by the finishing order in race two, but with the leading positions reversed. The number of positions to be reversed varies between six and ten and is determined when the Race Two winner draws the number from a hat.

Drivers retiring from a race will be allocated starting grid positions for the next race depending on the number of laps they completed before retiring.

The free practice, qualifying, race and starting grid process are repeated at each race meeting.

Success ballast
If the driver is successful in the first race, the weight will be increased and will be effective for the second race in the same meeting. The increase in success ballast weight awarded after the second race will be effective for the third race in the same meeting.

At the end of the third race at each meeting, the top five drivers in the championship are handed success ballast for the following meeting. They must take part with this ballast in free practice, qualifying and the first race, before the handicapping system is re-adjusted for race two.

The weight is allocated according to the following scale:

1st: 45 kgs
2nd: 36 kgs
3rd: 27 kgs
4th: 18 kgs
5th: 9 kgs
6th or lower or not classified or non-participant: 0 kgs

Success ballast weight is not accumulated over the course of the season.

Drivers' championship
In each race, the following points are awarded to classified finishers:

1st = 15 points
2nd = 12 points
3rd = 10 points
4th = 8 points
5th = 6 points
6th = 5 points
7th = 4 points
8th = 3 points
9th = 2 points
10th = 1 point

One additional point will be awarded to:
the driver who starts in pole position for the first race of each meeting
the driver who sets the fastest lap in each race. If two or more drivers achieve the same fastest lap time each will be awarded one point
each driver who is classified as the race leader (on crossing the finish line during the course of the race) during each race. A driver can only earn this point once irrespective of how many times he or she has led that race
Manufacturers' championship
Points are awarded to a maximum of three nominated cars of the same make, provided they are listed as a classified finisher in the final results. Points are awarded as per the drivers' championship, but without the additional points for pole position, fastest lap and leading the race.

Teams championship
Points are awarded to the two highest-placed cars from each team in each race. Again, points are awarded as per the drivers' championship, but without the additional points for pole position, fastest lap and leading the race.

Vauxhall Vectra VXR

Performance forged on the racetrack
Launched in 2004, the VXR range is created by people who are passionate about cars for people who are passionate about performance. Vauxhall's VXR racing team has dominated the British Touring Car Championship for five years running, winning nine of the ten available drivers' and manufacturers' titles. The same uncompromising dedication and engineering brilliance that have produced such record-breaking success on the racetrack have also gone into Vauxhall's VXR range of cars.

From the first glance at a VXR, the racing heritage is evident - specially shaped tail-pipes, honeycomb front grille, large-diameter alloy wheels, sports suspension and front and rear spoilers scream style, poise and dynamism.

The interior evokes the spirit of the track too - Recaro sports seats with leather-trimmed side bolsters, alloy pedals, three-spoke leather-covered steering wheels with VXR logo, VXR gear knobs, racing-style instruments and carbon-fibre door inserts - it's dynamic styling for those who take their driving seriously.

But the real excitement and full appreciation of VXR's racing pedigree is experienced behind the wheel. Six-speed transmissions and short-throw gear changes make moving through the power curve exhilaratingly good fun. Agile, responsive steering lets the driver feel in complete control of every bend in the road. Exceptional torque adds greater excitement to every surge of acceleration. Large, ventilated disc brakes help the cars match that blistering responsiveness with ultra-powerful deceleration and precise feel through the pedal. Optimum tuning of the exhaust produces the thrilling growl and forceful rumble of engines that make these cars some of the most powerful performers in their class.

The VXR badge is a symbol of the combined technological resources of the global General Motors group and the recognised expertise of consultants Lotus and the Triple Eight racing team. Tested in the crucible of high-performance racing, their combined engineering skills have produced a car that wins time and again, on the track and on the open road. That winning combination is alloyed into intense driving pleasure for every VXR owner.

Amato challenges fellow racers to help fight illegal street racing

Joe Amato, the most decorated driver in Top Fuel history with 52 national event wins and five NHRA titles, will serve as spokesman for SEMA's Racers Against Street Racing (RASR) program in 2004 and beyond.

"Going fast is cool," Amato said. "I built my career around going fast, but we've all seen too many kids dying for no reason. You can't pick up a newspaper or watch the news these days without seeing another needless tragedy.

"I think it's time for the racing community as a whole to band together and get the message across to our young people that illegal street racing is a killer," added Amato. "We all understand the need for speed and the exhilaration of beating the guy in the other lane, but why be stupid about it? We can make a big impact if kids start hearing this message from their racing heroes."

Amato's representation of the RASR program has already begun; he displayed the RASR logo on his Darrell Russell-driven Top Fuel dragster at the ACDelco Las Vegas NHRA Nationals. The logo will become a permanent part of Amato's race car, and he hopes other teams will follow.

James Bond' Aston Martin DBS Unveiled

the next 007 film, “Casino Royale” which is due to be release in November, 2006. According to Aston Martin Design Director, Marek Reichman, the car, which has a future design, is between the elegant DB9 road car and the powerful DBR9 race car and is instantly recognisable as an Aston Martin. With no details about the new DBS, the car in the movie will obviously be equipped with secret weapons and the usual Bond gadgets. According to some news, beside “the old” Aston Martin - James Bond ( Daniel Craig ) will also drive a £22,000 Mondeo.

The DBS continues our proud and lengthy association with James Bond. The DBS is not of the understated elegance of a DB9, nor the youthful agility of the V8 Vantage. It is explosive power in a black tie and has its own unique character which will equal that of James Bond.
- Aston Martin Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Dr Ulrich Bez added -

Honda Civic Type-R

World Car Fans has a gallery of new spy photos of Honda Motor's Euro-Civic hatchback, apparently in Type-R trim. The lightly disguised Civic looks like it should be a worthy competitor in the european market's hot hatch wars.Although WCF reports that all models of the new hatch will get sportier suspension tuning than the sedan, the real fun is reserved for the Type-R, which gets a 197 hp 2-liter engine - good for a 0-100 km/h time of 6.5 seconds.The Civic hatchback hits U.K. showrooms this summer, after its debut at the British Motor Show. The Type-R should appear next year. Follow the link for lots more photos!

Audi awards Q5 production to Germany

Audi's next salvo in its rapidly expanding softroader arsenal, the Q5, will be built in Ingolstadt, Germany. The announcement came this week, courtesy of Audi's Chariman of the Board, Dr. Martin Winterkorn. Production of the new model is expected to commence in 2008, involving about 1,700 workers. The decision is being touted by the automaker as an important demonstration of their commitment to their assembly operations in Germany. This is the second sign of the automaker's investment in its motherland, as Audi announced not long ago that its coming R8 supercar is to be build in Neckarsulm, a German city near Stuttgart.

Lexus IS 350 almost ready for American Le Mans

announced in December that they would be fielding a team of two IS 350's in the 2006 American Le Mans Series GT2 class and they've been hard at work getting the car ready for competition.

The team has announced that they will begin testing in the next few weeks with the goal of a race debut in July. Although we'd love to be racing this weekend in Houston, building a new, competitive, GT2 car from the ground up is a complex undertaking," said Team Lexus owner Chuck Goldsborough. "Our team has been working very hard to design and build the new cars, with inevitable challenges along the way. Once complete, the task of development then starts and must ramp up very quickly."

Rumor has it that the IS 350 will be producing over 450 hp from a production based V6 with the final weight of the car weighing less than 2,800 lbs. The car will retain its double wishbone front and multi-link rear suspension, suitably modified for the task and tuned to work with the large BBS-mounted Michelin racing slicks.

The IS 350 is in for stiff competition facing the like of Porsche, Ferrari, and Panoz in the very competitive GT2 class.

Seat Leon Sport

SEAT is going to pull the covers off its hottest new Leon so far at next week’s Madrid Motor Show (25th May), with the world debut of the new Leon FR. This 5door coupe - hatch (notice the Alfa Romeo influenced hidden rear door handles) will be offered with two engines, a 200 Hp petrol and 170 Hp diesel with styling modifications to match.
DESIGN: The arrival of the new FR sees the Leon step up another gear in the visual department. In particular, the front air intake design with honeycomb grille is very distinct from that found on other Leons, taking inspiration from the Leon Touring Cars of both the BTCC and WTCC. At the rear, the effect is equally dramatic, with a black mock-diffuser also inspired by the race-track. Silver-painted door mirrors and 17-inch alloy wheels (with 18-inch versions available as an option) complete the look.
The distinctive red and black ‘FR’ badge is applied to not only the rear of the car, but also extensively throughout the sporty interior. It appears on the specially designed leather-covered steering wheel, silver gearknob, within the rev counter (which, like the other dials, features a white background) and is embroidered on to the backrests of the sports seats.
ENGINES: Power is provided from a choice of two engines. Making its debut for the first time in a SEAT is VW Golf GTI’s turbocharged 2.0-litre TFSI petrol unit, developing 200 Hp and 280 Nm (207 lb ft) of torque from 1,800 to 5,000 rpm. The sprint from rest to 62 mph (0-100 km/h) takes 7,3 seconds while top speed is 142 mph (228 km/h)

With 170 Hp and a 350 Nm (258 lb ft) of torque from its advanced 16-valve, unit-injector engine, the diesel powered Leon TDI FR offers zesty performance with low fuel consumption of 47.1 mpg (provisional figure) on the combined cycle. Top speed is 133 mph (213 km/h), with 0 to 62 mph (0-100 km/h) taking 8, 2 seconds.
The Leon FR will be available in Europe in June. It should be noted that Seat is going to unveil an even more powerful version of the Leon at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. The Leon Cupra will be offered with the same 2.0 TFSI as the FR, but with more power –about 240 HP.

The Civic Type-R Concept Debuts at Geneva

The Civic Type-R Concept Debuts at Geneva
When Honda unveils a new sports concept there is always a sense of anticipation and the new Civic Type R is no exception. To please all its fans, Honda engineers have designed a 'superhatch' to deliver blistering performance from the same power output as the previous incarnation (200 bhp). The aggressive, lower and wider-looking body encases a new 2.0 liter engine and the model, built in Britain, will go on sale in early 2007 priced around £18,000.

What is a Type R?The Type R name was introduced by Honda Motorcycles, where the letter R was added to conventional bike names to indicate a performance derivative. For example, the CB – a standard 4-cylinder across-the-frame bike – became the CB-R, a sporting model.

One of the earliest Type R cars was the Honda NSX-R, a stripped-down, lightweight version of the NSX supercar. This was developed in response to claims the NSX did not have enough power to compete with rival cars from Porsche and Ferrari. The key factor in this argument – and a point proved by the NSX-R – was the importance of the power to weight ratio.

Sport Audi RS4

Audi RS4

Audi is celebrating 25 years of the quattro 4WD system and, to mark this, are launching the new RS4 at Geneva. First used on the RS2 Avant in 1993, the RS badge is the ultimate expression of Audi values and the models have always shown a dedicated (and expensive) approach to design modifications to achieve their goals. The RS4 continues this philosophy with an extensively modified 4.2 litre V8 motor giving a massive 420ps output. Other modifications include using aluminium suspension compo nents, 30mm wider tracks and lovely 18” alloys. The revised front bumper incorporates a deeper main grille with hexagonal mesh, flanked by RS-trademark deep side intake grilles. The rear uses big bore exhausts as the main visual clue to the changes. As before, those wider tracks mean unique front and rear bumpers and fenders. Very expensive. And where other manufacturers would simply add a trunk spoiler, Audi designers have taken the opportunity of a whole new rear fender pressing to modify the trailing edge of the fender and tool up a matching trunklid with integrated lip spoiler. That's dedication for you.

Bugatti EB 110 from the 90's

The Bugatti EB110 is an exclusive supercar, the 1990s successor to one of the most celebrated marques in automotive history. It was unveiled on September 15, 1991 exactly 110 years after Ettore Bugatti's birth.The EB 110 had a 60-valve, quad-turbo V12 powering all four wheels through a six-speed gearbox. The 3.5 L (3499 cc) engine was capable of 553 PS (542 hp/407 kW) at 8000 rpm. Acceleration to 100 km/h (62 mph) took just 3.6 seconds, and the car topped out at 209 mph (336 km/h).This car was definitely innovative at that time.

2005 Porsche Rinspeed Carrera

2005 Porsche Rinspeed Carrera

The Porsche tuner Rinspeed creates a new and exclusive look for the Porsche 911 (997).

Whether Carrera or Carrera S, Coupe or Convertible, Swiss tuner Rinspeed offers new aerodynamics package for these models for immediate delivery. The original front bumper is accentuated by a front spoiler lip which increases the down force. Esthetically designed side sills let the 997 appear to be lower and more stretched. A fixed rear wing optimizes the effect of the movable factory rear spoiler and underlines the powerful and sporty looks. The rear bumper add-on lip in a diffusor design extends the bumper downwards and sets the twin angular double exhaust tips of the sport muffler effectually in scene. The Swiss tuner also offers the well-known aluminum wheel in the "R5/1" design either in 18 inch or 19 inch. The front axle takes at most a 8.5x19" and the rear axle a 11x19" wheel. Tires of the dimensions 235/35-19 and 315/25-19 are recommended.

A highlight is set by the gull wing doors by the Swiss customizing company. The original doors swing upwards instead of laterally.

Suspension wise Rinspeed opts for either sporty springs with a lowering of approximately 1 inch (25 mm) or alternatively an in height and stiffness adjustable coil over suspension kit which can also be used for vehicles equipped with the PASM.

The interior is enhanced by full leather trims in any color and variation, carbon decor elements, air bag sport steering wheels, aluminum pedals, foot rests and shift knobs...

A scorching San Marino for SEAT Sport

A scorching San Marino for SEAT Sport
Run in searing temperatures, the two San Marino rounds of the FIA World Touring Car Championship saw SEAT Sport increase its points total, with Rickard Rydell, Peter Terting and Jason Plato all scoring points in the second of the two races.Race 1Starting from 3rd on the grid, Jordi Gene was quickly embroiled in a bruising fight with several other cars, but his race ended on only the 2nd lap when the Toledo Cupra was hit by the Alfa Romeo of Augusto Farfus and then pushed off the track by Roberto Colciago's Honda.The fight was no less damaging further back, with Peter Terting's car trailing pieces of the rear bodywork after an encounter on the opening lap. Terting had started from 17th on the grid after his engineers discovered an engine problem after qualifying and were forced to change the engine, resulting in a 10-place penalty.Terting, Rickard Rydell and Jason Plato in the other SEAT Sport Toledos ran together for much of the 11 lap race, with an error from Rydell allowing his colleagues past on lap 6, although slight contact between Jason and Peter allowed Rickard to pass once again on the same lap. The gap to 8th placed Alex Zanardi was just too great, however, and the trio finished just outside the points.Rickard Rydell (9th): "It's a shame -- I was quicker than Zanardi and I should have been able to pass him to be on pole for Race 2. I made a small mistake when I tried to pass him and both Jason and Peter passed me, but then Peter touched Jason and I was able to get past them again. To get onto the podium in Race 2 is really not possible, so I'll be happy if I can just score some points."Peter Terting (10th): "The race was okay for me; the car was fast and I was obviously quicker than Rickard with his ballast, but it's always difficult to overtake a teammate and so I stayed behind, rather than risk a collision. Someone hit me from behind just after the start and broke the bodywork, but it wasn't a big problem. We're changing the set-up for Race 2 and so I'll see what I can do and try and get points."Jason Plato (11th): "I'm disappointed, because we clearly showed the SEATs were quick, but we just couldn't get past. I was quicker than Rickard, but to be fair he was being held up; in all honesty, the move I'd have to make to get past him was really risky and so I held back rather than risk taking us both off. It's actually good for me to do a hot race like that, since we never get weather like this in England!"Jordi Gene (DNF): "I had been pushed by someone in every corner, but I was catching Dirk Muller and trying to pass him when first Farfus hit me and then Colciago pushed me into the wall. It's very disappointing; they're always warning drivers about standards of driving and some of them still do what they want. As a result, a good position in Race 2 is unrealistic and so I'm very disappointed."Race 2 ...Full report view on motorsport.com

A Guide to Gas Powered RC Cars

A Guide to Gas Powered RC Cars
If you’re a fan of radio-controlled vehicles, but find standard RC to be lacking in power and running time, you might want to consider looking into gas powered RC cars. These cars, which run on a nitromethane-based fuel that is often referred to as "glow fuel" or "nitro", offer a level of realism and performance that you just won’t find on battery powered cars. Gas powered RC cars are also often highly customizable, allowing hobbyists to utilize a variety of engines and design types… there are even different types of transmitters available depending upon how you would prefer your car to work. Below are some of the options available for gas powered RC cars, giving you an idea of the level of customization that you can achieve.
Engines
Obviously, one of the more important aspects of gas powered RC cars is the engine. A variety of different engine models are available for you to choose from, but in general most cars of this type will have what are commonly referred to as "glow" engines. A "glow" engine is a 2-cycle internal combustion engine, creating the power that gas powered RC cars are known for and adding a bit of realism to the car with the exhaust that is produced. Instead of the spark plugs that a full-size automotive engine would have, these engines use a "glow plug" that is heated by what is known as a "glow starter" This heat is then held by the plug and is used to fire the engine strokes for the remainder of the running time.
Fuel
As mentioned above, the "gas" used by gas powered RC cars isn’t actually gasoline… it’s a special fuel that is nitromethane-based and formulated for the cars’ engines. Special lubricants are added to the fuel mixture to protect the engine from excessive heat and wear; the lubricants work in much the same way as gas-oil mixtures in some chainsaws and other small-engine equipment. Other fuel accessories may be needed to go with your car. A pump or special bottle may be used to get the fuel into the RC car’s fuel tank, and filters in the fuel line may need to be replaced from time to time.
Radio
The radio that you use to control your gas powered RC cars can be the same type that is used to control an electric model of RC car. A 2-channel radio system. It’s important to keep in mind that just because the car’s engine runs on a liquid fuel doesn’t mean that you have no need of batteries. In addition to the battery that powers the radio controller, you might find yourself in need of batteries to supply power to the radio receiver in the car itself. Of course, with some receivers it may be possible to have the power supplied by the motor of the car itself. The type of receiver that you use and the power supply that it needs are one consideration to keep in mind when comparing different parts or different cars.
Sport vs. Competition
A variety of different options and body styles exist for gas powered RC cars. You can choose from trucks, sedans, buggies, popular car models, and even stock cars. Once you’ve decided upon the body style and layout that’s right for you, however, you may find yourself facing one additional choice. Many of the car models available commercially come in two distinct types; a sport version, and a competition version. Sport cars tend to cost less, and offer basic options that are popular with beginners and casual hobbyists. For those who want to race their cars against other dedicated hobbyists, though, there are the competition cars which tend to have more power and higher speeds and offer advanced options such as oil shocks and ball bearings. Competition models may not be a complete car, however, since they are designed to allow for more customization… many of these kits require you to get the engine that you want to go with it separately, as well as the car body in many cases (since the kit only provides the main chassis.)
Kits vs. RTR
If you’ve decided that you want to buy gas powered RC cars, you often have to make a choice between buying a kit, so that you can build the car yourself, or buying a ready-to-race car (also known as RTR) that is ready to be fueled and go right out of the box. RTR cars are good for beginners or casual hobbyists, but aren’t highly customized. Kits, on the other hand, may require additional work but allow the builder to decide exactly how they want their car put together. Should you use a kit, it’s important to remember that you’ll need to make sure that you have the engine that you want, paint and basic tools on hand for assembly and decoration, and additional tools and parts depending upon the kit that you purchase.
Regardless of the type of car that you buy, though, you’re certain to find yourself amazed at the power and performance of these cars loved by hobbyists and racers around the world.

As strange as it seems now, SUBARU wasn't a prominent contender in motorsports until 1990. SUBARU 1000 (a model for the Japanese domestic market released in 1966) and later models had been entered in national Japanese rallies with some success, but SUBARU's participation in international events was very limited.
